The Nablus Report

Sight Surgery International finished an eye surgery clinic in the Palestinian Town of Nablus in the West Bank.  Team members Roberto Jule MD ( San Salvador,El Salvador), Karl Salazar MD (San Salvador, El Salvador) and operating room technician Baillie R. Brown (Santa Barbara, CA) completed 70 sight-restoring eye surgeries during the 4 day clinic.
The clinic was conducted in conjunction at the invitation of the Minister of Health, the lead government ophthalmologist of Nablis, Anan Mater, MD , with support from Deseret Foundation of Utah and PCRF, a local charitable organization headquartered in Ohio.
Local surgeon, Anan Mater, MD pre-screened all patients and participated in the surgeries. This clinic was part of a skills enhancement educational program to train him in phacoemulsification, a surgical procedure used in developed countries for cataract surgery.
Baillie R. Brown, the overall clinic coordinator, has been leading surgical  teams around the world for 30 years and into Nablus for over 10 years.
Sight Surgery International provides free eye surgery and educational ophthalmic skills enhancement around the world.  The next clinic will be in San Salvador, El Salvador, where Brown will participate in a "Cataractathon" where Association members all donate part of a week doing free eye surgery for patients who could not otherwise afford cataract surgery. SSI will provide overall coordination, surgical supplies and multiple surgical instrument sets.
